Robert J. Doyle, 96

March 17, 1924 – May 18, 2020

The angels have come to escort Robert J. Doyle to his final resting place after passing peacefully in his home after a long and glorious life. Robert was born on St. Paddy's Day, March 17, 1924 in Butte, MT. to Christopher L. Doyle and Hazel (Satterwaite) Doyle. He attended IC school and later Lincoln Elementary and then on to Butte High School.

Robert was a hard worker right from the start doing any kind of job he could from paperboy, milk carrier, odd jobs for neighbors, or anyway to help out he family, especially caring for his younger sister, Lil. He started with the Civilian Conservation Corps where he worked at a young age doing all kinds of jobs. One of his fondest was as a purchasing agent for the camps working on projects all over the state, including Canyon Ferry Dam. Robert was honorably discharged from the CCCs to enlist in the US army at age 17.

Upon completion of boot camp, Robert was assigned to a Marine Corp Division as an anti-aircraft spotter/radio operator. Then he was off to the Pacific Theater where he earned four Beach Heads which included Iwo Jima and was on Iwo Jima when the American Flag was raised. Robert was wounded three times during his length of service and at the end of the conflict was honorably discharged and returned home to Butte.

Robert worked numerous jobs including one as a cook in a little café in Manhattan MT where he met the love of his life, Nona Lee Larson. They returned to Butte and were wed on August 16, 1947. Robert started working for the Anaconda Company and worked in various underground mines until he met his calling as a machinist at the Mt. Con Machine Shop, where he worked until his retirement. Robert and Nona were blessed with four children, Leaona, Daniel, Robert Jr. and Jeffery and 73 years of commitment.

Robert was an avid fly fisherman and could be said to catch a fish out of any mudhole. He loved his weekend trips to Manhattan to fish this favorite river, the West Gallatin. He was also and avid hunter and ice fisherman. He also loved his old western movies. But one of his fondest things was his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by his father, Christopher Doyle, mother, Hazel Satterwaite, sister and brother in law, Lillis and Joseph Croff, son, Robert Doyle Jr., son in law John Anderwald as well as his beloved dogs, Sandy, Mandy, and Jellybean.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Nona Doyle, daughter Leaona (Jim) Dorcheus of Butte. Sons, Daniel (Jackie) Doyle of Butte and Jeffery (Jerri) Doyle of Butte. Grandchildren Jonet Doyle of Indiana, Wendy (John) Tadday of Butte, Kristine (Alan) Faulkner of Butte, Tony (Michelle) Doyle of Butte, John (Cheryl) Doyle of Butte, Christopher (Maureen) Doyle of Butte, Sean Doyle of Utah, Ashlea (Dave) Neill of Butte, Blake (Chantal) Anderwald of Missoula, Trina (Damien) Gerry of Butte, Alisha (Joe) Bowman of Kansas, Trent Doyle and Jason Doyle of Butte and lots of great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and visitation will be held at Duggan Dolan's Mortuary on Tuesday, May 26 from 11:00 – 12:00 with chapel service from 12:00 – 1:00. Interment of ashes immediately following at St. Patrick's Cemetery. A celebration of life will occur at a later and safer date.
