Mary Kay Maloney died suddenly and unexpectedly on June 3rd. 2025.

Mary Kay was born March 1, 1953, in Butte. She was the youngest of four children born to Francis 'Pat' Thompson and Corita T. Thompson, nee McGinley. She attended St. Joseph's Grade School and Girls Central High School, and then matriculated at Montana State University.

Mary Kay married William Joseph "Bubba" Maloney in 2003. She instantly became a family member of the Maloney-Harrington clan. Mary Kay and Bubba fulfilled their lifelong dream of visiting Ireland in 2004. They were happily married until Bubba's untimely death in 2010.

Mary Kay loved Butte and loved being Irish. She joked about An Rí Rá being a Holy Day of Obligation and St. Patrick's Day a High Holy Day of Obligation.

Paddy's Day always started at midnight on the 17th with the Maloney family and friends painting a green shamrock on the intersection of Park St. and Main St. The festivities continued all day from there. Bubba was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, and they have a scholarship in his name. Mary Kay attended every St. Patrick's Day Friendly Sons dinner to welcome and congratulate the recipient.

Mary Kay was a devoted Catholic. She lived her faith. She was an active parishioner at St. Ann's Church. She volunteered for numerous activities at St. Ann's. She attended Mass daily and served as an Eucharistic Minister for St. Ann's parishioners.

Being a devoted Catholic included Mary Kay supporting the Notre Dame football team. She traveled with Bubba, and later with her friends, all around the United States watching the "Fighting Irish" football games. It all started at the Notre Dame campus when Mary Kay and Bubba were in South Bend for a game, and Bubba proposed marriage to her.

Mary Kay worked 31 years in land and title research for the gas and oil business. She began her career with the Montana Power Company in the early 1980s and continued with various companies until her retirement. She loved her work, and she loved her work friends more.

Mary Kay volunteered for many events and activities around Butte. She volunteered at An Rí Rá, St. Patrick's Day, and the Folk Festival, to name just a few. She was especially fond of the Butte Food Bank. She donated money to them and made sandwiches every Wednesday for the homeless and those in need.

Mary Kay was preceded in death by her father, Pat, her mother, Corita, her older sister, Michelle Connole, her older brother, Jack Thompson, and her sisters-in law Kathy, Sherrie, and Lori Maloney. She is survived by her brother and his wife, Patrick and Liz Thompson; her brother-and-sister-in-law, Steve and Celine Maloney; her sister-in-law Kathy Powers; her nephews and niece, Patrick O'Neill and his wife, Suzie, Sam and Jackson Maloney, and Killorn O'Neill and her husband, Mark; her grandniece and grandnephew, Ayla and Killian O'Neill; and all her McGinley cousins and Thompson cousins. A special thank you to Tim and Char McGinley for all of their many years of love and support for Mary Kay.

Her funeral Mass is scheduled for Friday, June 27th at St. Ann's Church, 2100 Farragut. Her memorial will start at 11 am at St. Ann's, and Mass at noon. Following her burial at the cemetery, there is a luncheon reception at the Finlen Hotel starting at 3 pm. Please join us.
