Margaret S. Leary

Margaret S. Leary passed away January 14, 2023. Margaret was born in Butte November 15, 1933, to Thomas and Margaret (Lunney) Seymour. She graduated from Girls' Central in 1951 and from Montana Tech in 1981. Margaret married James J. Leary in 1956 and together they raised 6 children.

Margaret was a member of the original study commission which wrote the charter for Butte-Silver Bow, and later served two terms on the Council of Commissioners. She was a long-time member of the Library Board and the Planning Board. She served on the Executive Board of Montana Tech as well as the Foundation Board, and the Alumni Association.  She was the first woman to be President of the Alumni Association, and the first woman to serve as the Executive Vice-President and Secretary-Treasurer of the Association. She was a charter member of the Literacy Board. Margaret was an eligibility technician for the Silver Bow County Office of Public Assistance.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years James, by her son, Dr. James J Leary, brother Thomas Seymour, sister Mary Catherine Duran, brother-in- law Donald Leary, sisters-in-law Betty Williams, Donna Leary and Marge Seymour and daughter-in- law Julie Leary Steuck.

Margaret is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Jo Anne and James Capp of Great Falls, sons and daughters-in law, Dr. Thomas and Cindy Leary of Peoria, AZ, William Leary of Butte, Robert Leary of Salt Lake City, UT and Joseph and Ann Marie Leary of Belgrade.  She is also survived by brother and sister-in law Martin and Aretta Seymour of Butte, eleven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Memorials are requested to the Thomas and Margaret Seymour Memorial Scholarship at Montana Tech, 1300 West Park Street, Butte, MT 59701

Relatives and friends may call after 5:00PM Wednesday in Holy Spirit Church.  Parish Vigil will be recited at 5:30PM.    Visitations will continue Thursday from 10:30AM to 11:00AM.  Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00AM.  Rite of Committal will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
