Dr. James Vincent Shannon (Vince) was born to Honore Walsh Shannon and John Shannon on November 15, 1933 in Butte, MT. He passed away February 21, 2016 at Riverside Health Care Center in Missoula, MT. He received his early education at St. Mary's grade school, and Boy's Central High School in Butte, MT. He attended Carroll College for a BS in Biology and was accepted at Marquette Universities Dental School where he obtained his Degree in Dental Science in 1962.
Upon graduation from Carroll College Vince worked for the Federal Government as a scientific laboratory technician researching brucellosis in Dillon MT. After a time he was appointed to supervisor of the medical lab in Dillon serving Barrett Hospital, the city water purification and analysis of agriculture soil and feed until entering Dental school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Once he completed his DDS Vince joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Kaiserslautern Germany, as the Commanding Officer of Dental labs in the 570th Medical Det., where he also practiced in the general dentistry clinic.
In 1964 following active duty, Captain Shannon married Susan Donovan and retuned to Butte to practice Dentistry with Dr. Jack Lowman. Three years later Vince his wife Susan and daughter Kelly moved to Boston where he practiced general dentistry, built a medical building and was appointed Assistant Professor of Fixed Prosthetic Dentistry at Boston University Dental School. During that time he had three additional children, Courtney, Emily and Colin. Vince continued his private practice and teaching at Boston University through 1998 when he was forced to retire due to esophageal cancer. After undergoing treatment and surgery he returned to his beloved home town of Butte where he lived with his brother Rod until moving to Anaconda in 2007.
Vince will be remembered for his impeccable work in the Dental field, great sense of humor and love for musical ditties. He loved people and his Irish Heritage was a very important part of his life. While living in Anaconda he became a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians where he reconnected with many childhood family and friends.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Montana Dental Association, American Dental Association, Massachusetts Dental Association, 3rd District Dental Society Massachusetts, Academy of General Dentistry, and American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics, Greater Boston Dental Society, and Honor Dental Society "Omicron Kappa Upsilon".
Vince was preceded in death by his mother, father, baby brother William and sister Helen Jacqueline, sister Marian Rita Lorello (Joseph), brother Kevin, brother Joe Pat, wife Geraldine, brother Rod, nephew Daniel, and niece Gerri O'Brien, great niece Molly Lindquist. He is survived by ex-wife Susan, daughters Kelly Shannon, Courtney Lindell (Steven), Emily Shannon, son Colin Shannon. Grandchildren Zachery Lindell, Emma Lindell, Caleb Lindell, Olivia Shannon. Sister-in-law Joan Redman Shannon, nieces JoAnn Lindquist (Jerry), Honore Bray (Don), Jacqueline Dewolf, Ellen Crane (Gordon), Margaret Harrington (Brian), JoEllen Shannon, Ann Johnson (Glen), nephews Kevin Shannon, Edwin John Shannon (Laurie) Dennis Shannon (Bill), Patrick Shannon (Mary), great nieces, great nephews and special friends Dan Combo, Jim Winston, Bob Kolin, Ed Radimacher, Ike Sheehan, Jim Sullivan, Dan Pinoch, Bill Dallas, Mike McGrath and Tom McGrath, Lawrence and Flossie Thomas and Gene Thomas.
Friends are asked to join the family on Tuesday, after 9;30 am, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Anaconda. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30. Rite of Committal will take place at a later date in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Anaconda Catholic Community or Foundation for Missoula Public Library Building Fund.
