James Michael Kavanaugh, (affectionately known to many as "Uncle Mike" or "Jimmy Michael"), went home to be with his Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 7th, 2024. He had his brother Dan by his side and holding his hand at the Salt Lake City Veterans Hospital.  James was born October 22, 1949 to Clifford "Red" Kavanaugh & Jessie Luella Conn Kavanaugh in Helena, Montana.  He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Clifford Patrick Kavanaugh.  He is survived by his daughter, Marissa Nolan Wang, spouse (Leon); brothers Dan, spouse (Micki) and Tim; sister Laura, spouse (Gene) and childhood friend Patti Lewis. He is well remembered as a loving father, brother, son, cousin, uncle, and friend.

James grew up in Butte, America and was known for his love of country, family, camping, photography and life's adventures.  He especially enjoyed the family reunions at the Conn family homestead in Hall.  After graduating from Butte High School he attended Montana Tech then went into the Navy August 1969.  James served in Vietnam in 1970 and 1971 receiving the Republic Vietnam Meritorious Service Medal and later served in Bahrain in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm.  James retired August 1993 serving his country honorably receiving numerous medals, ribbons, and awards.  He continued his support for our country and troops as an active leader and member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans, donating to several veterans support organizations.

James worked as a lineman with Pacific Bell.  Some of his best stories were of his days climbing phone poles under Our Lady of the Rockies and other beautiful parts of Montana.

While saying goodbye to James has been no easy task for his loved ones, his bright blue eyes gifted to him by his mother, and earnest smile remind those honored enough to have known him of what lies beyond heaven's gates. Until we meet again, Rest Easy James Michael Kavanaugh.

Memorial services will be held at Sunset Cemetery on June 29, 2024 at 9:45AM 5001 Crackerville Road Anaconda, MT 59711.
