Fred Aaron Perry, most recently of Montana City, Montana, passed away on September 25, 2026. Born on April 17, 1940, on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, Fred lived most of his life in Montana, often traveling around the state (and getting pulled over occasionally) to visit friends and relatives. Fred shared his stories, humor, and laughter with those who had the privilege of knowing him, and he served as an inspiration to many seeking and maintaining sobriety.
At 18, Fred enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1958-1964. He was stationed with the 176th Ordinance Company in Ft. George. G. Meade, Maryland from 1958-1961 and was then stationed with Co. B. 1st Bn 505th Inf. 3rd. He earned his GED equivalency while in the service in June of 1960 and then earned another GED from the State of Montana in July of 1989. Fred also attended Fort Belknap and Chemeketal Community Colleges and through his example encouraged all his relatives to embrace life’s opportunities. Fred took his last drink of alcohol on October 8th, 1988, and was a familiar face in the A.A. community in Butte and beyond.
Fred loved traditional dancing at powwows and gathered many family stories that he ensured the next generations would remember. He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas C. Perry and Maggie Blackbird Perry, and his older brothers and sisters, Aaron, Charles, Edwin, William, Robert, Ruth Margaret, Caroline, Eleanor, Colleen, and Jeanette. Fred is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on October 9th at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Butte, Montana. All are welcome for a 10-11am visitation and 11am funeral Mass. All who knew Fred are welcome to share memories and enjoy food and refreshments following the services.
