David George Merritt, affectionately known as "Dave", age 81, passed away in his hometown of Butte, Montana on October 7th, 2025. Dave was welcomed into the world on September 3rd, 1944, by his mother Freida, father George and his older brother Ronald.

He lived with his devoted mother in Washington State until her passing, after which he returned to Butte to be close to friends and family.

Dave was known for his cheerful outlook and kind heart. His unwavering positivity and appreciation for life's simple blessings brought warmth to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A proud and dedicated participant in the Special Olympics, Dave's enthusiasm and determination shone brightly through his many years of competition. He earned numerous medals in basketball, bowling, and track and field, and was admired as a role model among his peers for his sportsmanship and joyful spirit.

Within his loving group home community, Dave found a true sense of belonging and filled each day with laughter, friendship, and light. He cherished the bonds he formed with those around him and was known for his good humor and lively personality. He enjoyed collecting model cars, watching NASCAR, or playfully trying to secure an extra cup of coffee. Among his fondest memories was his unforgettable trip to Disneyland, where he delighted in meeting the characters, collecting their autographs, and experiencing the excitement of flying on an airplane. Dave also loved riding and washing his bike and wagon, as well as traveling throughout Butte by foot or bus to visit friends and family. Dining out was one of his favorite pastimes—especially when chicken fried steak was on the menu, or, in earlier years, as many corn dogs as he could enjoy.

In his later years, Dave continued to thrive in the warmth of his group home, surrounded by caregivers and friends who became like family. Each day began with his familiar greeting—"I'm not going to cause trouble today. Do you believe me?"—always followed by his bright, contagious laugh. Among the many caregivers who supported Dave throughout the years, he shared a particularly special bond with Beth, who became not only a caregiver but a cherished lifelong friend. Her care, along with the compassion of so many others, helped ensure that Dave's days were filled with love, dignity, and joy.

Dave will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for his gentle spirit, his laughter, and his capacity to find happiness in every moment. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.

Dave was preceded in death by his mother Freida Kidder, father George Merritt and his beloved nephew Daniel Merritt.  He is survived by his brother Ronald Merritt, his niece Rhonda (Chris) Trickel, great niece Caitlin (Sam) Fletcher, and his great nephews Scott Trickel (Ashely), Mike Merritt (Ashlee) and Matt Merritt (Rashelle) and their children.

A private celebration of his life is to be held on November 9th 2025.
